We have loved Shannon's work for so long now. Her use of light. The natural smiles she evokes from her couples. It's just all too good. So when she sent over this sweet Virginia wedding, we knew immediately that we had to share this day with our readers!
From the Bride, Rachel... We live in Washington, DC, but fell in love with Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia early in our relationship. Being able to visit the wineries and go hiking and camping in the area is a nice escape from city life. When Vince proposed on a hiking trip at the top of a mountain near Charlottesville, I knew we HAD to get married there.
Our guests were welcomed to Charlottesville with gift bags full of Virginia goodies, but we had to make one exception! Although we live in DC and adore Charlottesville, I am a Tar Heel and Vince is a Florida Gator, so we had to pay tribute to our roots! My sister made "state" cookies for the welcome bags and they were a huge hit!
Vince and I tried to weave meaningful details throughout the day that truly represent us as a couple. When preparing for our marriage, we read the book The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller. This book was so inspiring to us as a guide for our own marriage. One of the main themes of the book is from 1 John 4 - that we love each other because Christ first loved us. We used this as our reading during our ceremony, and Vince had this engraved inside my wedding band. Also, the book discusses marriage vows and how this promise is not only a covenant to our spouse, but part of our marriage covenant with Christ. As Vince’s wedding gift, I had his vows calligraphed and framed to have in our home as a constant reminder of our commitment to one another.
From the Bride, Rachel... One thing that was very important to both of us was the dinner (I blame my Southern roots). We love food very much and are always exploring great eats in our city and when we travel. We knew we wanted to have a family style dinner with all of our closest friends and family around the table-–we wanted to create the perfect atmosphere to share stories and laughs. Of course we had a menu of upscale Southern cuisine with some of our favorite dishes such as barbecue, collard greens, and grits–all with a refined twist.
Another detail we wanted to incorporate was our signature cocktails. One of Vince’s favorite spring cocktails is the Pimms Cup, so I HAD to name it the "Vin’s Cup" since Vin is my nickname for him. I LOVE rosé and had that incorporated into my cocktail, "Virginia is for Lovers."
Finally, we are very family-oriented, so we wanted to pay tribute to our family as much as possible. I shared a first-look with my dad, wore my grandmother's pearls, and Vince and I had a table filled with favorite photos of our grandparents.
